January 23, 2020Migraines are neurological conditions that cause painful headaches that are often accompanied by sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and vomiting. Depending on their severity, migraines can interfere with your daily life.
Daith piercings have recently gained popularity because they can help to relieve migraines. But what is a Daith piercing and how can it prevent or treat migraines? Here’s what you need to know.
What is a Daith piercing?
A Daith piercing is a piercing on the ear’s innermost cartilage fold, the crus of the helix, just above the entrance to your ear canal. The piercing is typically performed with a straight hollow needle.
Many people get Daith piercings because they like how they look. The most popular jewelry type for this type of piercing is a captive bead ring. But Daith piercings have also been said to alleviate migraine pain.
How are Daith piercings connected to migraines?
Acupuncture is a popular alternative treatment for migraines and headache relief. In acupuncture, the ear has certain pressure points.
Daith piercings gained popularity in the mid-2010s because of the belief that they activated a pressure point on the ear that could help relieve migraine symptoms. The piercing would need to be done by a trained professional to ensure that the piercing is in the right spot for it to affect the specific pressure point.
Do Daith piercings work for headache relief?
The science is inconclusive as to whether Daith piercings actually work for migraine symptoms. Researchers can’t yet recommend Daith piercings for migraine relief, but one 2017 study found that a participant’s migraine symptoms did improve after receiving a Daith piercing.
The researchers involved in the study concluded that more clinical trials would need to be done to link the procedure to the participant’s headache relief. That being said, although the science is inconclusive, many people receive Daith piercings for migraines and find relief from their migraine symptoms.
